There is no information as to who built this temple, but Rani Ahilyabai of Indore renovated it. What is known is that Baba Dabral discovered it in the year 1960.
According to Hindu mythology Bhairav is the fifth incarnation to
Mahakal who is lord Shiva Himself. Vikrant Bhairavj in one of the Ashta
(eight) Bhariravjis who according to skanda purana lives in Ujjain. The
second among them is Vikrant Bhairavji.
Skandapurana
relates in the ‘Awantya khanda’ under Bhairav Tirtha that Bhairav lies
at the northern bank of the shipra river, his temple is located abreast a
crematorium called Aukhaleshwar which means a place where the dead have
no rebirth after cremation, i.e. they attain salvation or Nirvana
Personal Visit
After visiting the Kal Bhairava temple in Ujjain, on the 20th and 21st April 2011, I also visited the Shri Vikrant Bhairav temple, which are a few meters away. I took these photos on this occasion. Although this temple is not as well known as the Kal Bhairava Temple, Ujjain, it is also very powerful.
I found this temple very serene and calm, and I was very happy that I could visit this temple.
There is a Black Dog idol at the gate of this temple as in all Bhairav Temples. I have shown the photos of the idol of the Black Dog from different angles, also shown for the first time the detailed photos of the VIKRANT BHAIRAV idol.
